The strongest bond of human sympathy,
outsite of the family relation,
should be one uniting all working people,
of all nations, and tongues, and kindreds.
--Abraham Lincoln
This is a reproduction of a painting by Robert Koehler, a German-American artist. Painted in 1886, it is believed to be the first painting of industrial struggle done anywhere in the world by a fine artist. The painting was inspired by the great U.S. railroad strike of 1877, which had its focal point in Pittsburgh. The men in the painting confronting the owner are machinists, which was the trade of Koehler's father. The situation is one where the men's grievances are such that they have walked off the job and confronted the owner with their intention to strike.
